Sierra picked up another 8 inches in the past 24 hours bringing the 2 day total to 18 inches, and the 4 day total to 32 inches. The December total is now 84 inches and 189 inches for the season already up top.
We will see sun and clouds today with scattered snow showers and plenty of cold air with highs only in the 20's. We could pick up an inch or two on the mountain depending on where the snow showers fall. Then tomorrow we have a break with the cold air continuing.
Thursday we should see an increase in clouds and wind as the next storm approaches from the Northwest. A strong cold low is going to drop down from the Gulf of Alaska and ahead of it the jet stream will be aimed right at Northern CA through the weekend. This will be a 3 day heavy snowfall event Fri-Sun with snow levels staying below lake level.
We should see the snow begin to fall Thursday night and then really pick up during the day on Friday. The snowfall should be constant through the weekend with heavier waves Friday, later Saturday and Sunday as the main low pushes through. The models are in pretty good agreement now with 3-4 feet of snow possible at the base through Sunday, and 4-6 feet possible up top.
It looks like we clear out on Christmas Eve and for Christmas day with lots of sun and plenty of fresh snow. The next storm looks like it may come in next Wednesday or Thursday and another for the New Years weekend.
Looking long-range it does still look like we could get a break in the storms to start January.
