From 32 Inches to Spring

With 2 final inches of snow Friday night, Snowfall totals since last Sunday tallied up to 32 inches on the mountain.

We begin to warm into the 50's Sunday and Monday, and near 60 the rest of the week at the base.

The pattern is going to setup with a low pressure in the Northeast Pacific and associated Polar jet stream merging with the subtropical jet stream pulling moisture from down near Hawaii. It may be juiced by the MJO making its way through the Pacific. That is going to hose the Pacific NW this week with rain and high elevation snow, and in British Columbia a ton of snow. The ridge in the North Pacific stays too far West this week and the precip stays to our North.

The strong jet will help to pump the warm ridge over CA all week. By next weekend the high pressure in the North Pacific will begin to push East. That will help to drive a cold trough and the jet stream down the coast. We should see colder air begin to move in by next Sunday, and maybe some snow.

The GFS forecast model brings in quite a bit of snow next Sunday into the following week. The European forecast model is much weaker with the system next weekend cutting off the moisture tap. Both setup a much colder and active pattern for week 2 with a cold trough along the West Coast with the potential for several systems to rotate through.

So get out and enjoy the 2 feet of fresh snow this weekend, lather up with sunscreen the rest of this week, and don't be fooled by the potentially false Spring.
